Leading the staff of amazing coaches will be camp directors, Felix Mercado  (Brown University Men's and Women's Head Coach) and his assistant coach Petar Momčilović. In addition to focusing on fundaments, they will share their philosophies and training methods that they implement at the highest levels.

 

Past campers have gone on to represent numerous colleges and win Olympic Gold Medals.

Designed by the top coaches and athletes in the country, the camp provides in-water instruction to make an immediate impact on an athlete’s game. Young athletes will have the opportunity to learn first hand how Olympic Athletes train, meet their nutritional needs, and balance their lives.

 

We want our campers to come home with experiences that enrich both the quality of their play and their life through a better understanding and greater appreciation for sport. They will  develope new techniques and a heightened level of self-confidence.

Whether you are learning the rules of water polo and how to eggbeater or preparing for college level competition, we have the best water polo camp for you. Upon arrival at camp, campers are placed in groups with other players having similar abilities and goals. Our camp staff will do their best to accommodate your needs, keeping in consideration your experience and desire to improve.

FELIX MERCADO

Felix Mercado

Felix Mercado earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration Management from American Intercontinental University in 2006. He also has an Associate of Arts degree in Secondary Education from Miami Dade College.

Felix Mercado was also the head coach and founder of the Raider Water Polo Club Foundation, and led the program to six Southeast Zone Championships. He has also offered his coaching expertise at numerous national team development camps for USA Water Polo.

Before arriving in Cambridge, Mercado spent 11 years coaching at Ransom Everglades School in Miami, Fla. During his tenure with Ransom, Mercado helped guide his squad to three Florida State Championships in the boys division and coached the girls program to six straight Final Four finishes.

In two years as the coach of the MIT club women's team, Mercado's squads posted a 30-3 record, making back-to-back appearances at the Club National Championships. He was named the North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in 2007. Mercado also served as an assistant coach at Hartwick College in the spring, as the Hawks finished fifth at the NCAA Championship.

In 2006, he was named CWPA Division III and CWPA Northern Division Coach of the Year after leading MIT's men's team to a second-place finish at the Division III Eastern Championship and the team's third-ever appearance at the Division I Eastern Championship. He posted a 26-34 record in Cambridge, as the Engineers attempted to integrate 12 freshmen into the program in 2006 after a 15-14 record in 2005.

Mercado was hired in the summer of 2007 as Brown's men's and women's water polo coach. He spent the two seasons prior to coming to Brown at the helm of the MIT men's varsity and women's club teams after one year as an assistant.

Mercado enjoyed a banner year in 2009 as the men's water polo team won a Northern Division title and the women's team claimed an Eastern College Association Conference (ECAC) championship. Mercado took home CWPA Northern Division Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year at Brown, earning the honor on the women’s side in 2008 and 2009 and on the men’s side in 2007.

In 2012, Mercado garnered CWPA Southern Division Women’s Coach of the Year laurels after leading the Bears to a 21-17 record. He posted a 20-15 record with Brown in 2011 and a 22-15 mark in 2010.

Mercado was elected President of the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches in 2013 following a season that saw Brown take fifth place at the CWPA Eastern Championships. Brown posted the nation's fifth-best team grade point average, collecting All-Academic Awards from the ACWPC, while Madison Pepper ’15 and Woods landed on the ACWPC All-American roster. The Bears also contended for the CWPA Southern Division Championship for the second straight year, falling to Princeton in the title game.

The 2014 season marked Brown's second 20-win campaign in three years, during which Mercado earned Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Coach of the Year honors and steered the Bears to fifth place at the CWPA Championship. Brown battled to its third-straight CWPA Southern Division title game appearance, while Kate Woods ’14 became a three-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-American and finished her career as Brown's all-time leading scorer.

In 2015, Mercado guided the Bears to a 20-17 record, marking the third time in four seasons that the team finished with 20 or more wins. He coached a pair of All-CWPA and ACWPC All-American performers in Shannon Crowley ’17 and Marisol Dakan ’18. Under Mercado’s tutelage, Dakan set Brown’s single-season saves record with 403 saves in 2015. As a team, the Bears out-performed their seed, placing fifth at the CWPA Championship with an 8-7 win over Harvard. In 2016, Mercado challenged a young team, which included eight freshmen, playing 19 ranked opponents on the season.

During the 2017 season, Brown posted a 21-10 record, marking the Bears’ seventh winning year and sixth 20-win campaign during the Mercado era. Mercado mentored Marisa Kolokotronis ’17 who earned Second Team All-CWPA and First Team All-CWPA Tournament accolades.

JOHN ABDOU

John Abdou 5meter Water Polo CoachJohn Abdou, a veteran collegiate and national team coach, has been named High Performance Director for USA Water Polo. In this position Abdou will oversee the Olympic Development Program in addition to coach and referee education and development. Working in unison with Senior National Team Head Coaches Adam Krikorian and Dejan Udovicic, Abdou will assist in implementing their technical vision throughout ODP and the USA Water Polo club system. "The addition of John Abdou to the USA Water Polo staff fills an essential need on many fronts. Along with cementing the leadership of our Olympic Development Program, his experience as a coach, athlete, and award winning teacher will play a vital role in the education and development of our coaches and officials. I aJohn Abdou 5meter Water Polo Coachm confident he will integrate seamlessly with our National Teams and properly disseminate their tactical and technical visions to the water polo community at large with great success. We feel incredibly fortunate that a person with John's experience, strong relationships across the country and high character and integrity will be joining our team," said Marty Samuels, USA Water Polo Chief Operating Officer. "I'm excited to serve the water polo community in America on a broader scale," said Abdou. "I am extremely passionate about teaching and coaching, so the opportunity to do so on a full time basis for our country was one that I could not pass up. I look forward to working with all athletes, coaches, referees and community members to strengthen our success as an organization both domestically and internationally."

Currently the Associate Head Coach for men's water polo at the University of California-Santa Barbara and Director/Boy's Head CoaJohn Abdou 5meter Water Polo Coachch of the Santa Barbara Water Polo Club, Abdou will begin his post with USA Water Polo full-time following the conclusion of the 2013 men's collegiate season. Prior to his time in Isla Vista, Abdou spent five years at Bucknell University, the last two serving as Head Coach of both the men's and women's programs. Within USA Water Polo, Abdou has remained active in the National Team pipeline in his position as ODP East Region Technical Director since 2008. Since 2010 he has also been a part of the coaching staff of the Men's Senior National "B" Team.A former social science teacher at Burbank High School, Abdou competed for the UC-Irvine men's water polo team earning his undergraduate degree in sociology in 2001. He added a masters degree in education from Bucknell in 2009. Abdou currently resides in Goleta, CA and will soon live in Huntington Beach, CA with his wife Anna and their son Gabriel.

PETER MOMCILOVIC

Petar Momcilovic Brown Water Polo Coach


Petar Momcilovic has directed 5meter cams for years. Momciliovic currently is an assistant coach for Brown University's men's and women's programs. He is in charge of player development and operations under head coach Felix Mercardo. 

Previously he helped lead Long Island University through a phenominal season. Prior to LIU, Momcilovic served as the head coach for both programs at Mercyhurst University while earning Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership with a concentration in Sports Leadership.

Momcilovic a native Serbian began coaching in London, United Kingdom, in 2011, and has coached at every level from the U12 age group to international competition. Before Mercyhurst, he was the Head Men's Water Polo Coach for Oxford University, where he led the team to their highest British University and College Sports conference finish (third place) and won the Southern BUCS for the first time.
